A recent report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace states that “Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world, with eight of the ten most peaceful countries coming from this region”. The index report ranks countries based on security and peace and shows that Portugal has jumped up 2 places from last year. It is now in 3rd place on the list of the safest countries in the world and with Iceland and New Zealand.
This means that it is now considered as the second most peaceful country in the region, ahead of nations such as Germany, Spain and Austria. This is the highest ranking Portugal has achieved and is a notable achievement seeing as it was ranked just 16th less than five years ago. Recent data released shows that the total investment brought by the programme has now exceeded €3bn. The numbers show that there were a total of 5,003 investors and over 8000 family members approved up to the end of April 2017, with most applicants choosing the real estate route to acquire residency.
These stats are much welcomed news for the Portuguese Immigration Services (SEF) who have already approved over 801 investment visas in 2017 and are further indicators that Portugal continues to attract global investors searching for residency and citizenship programmes.
